BARMI. A MEDITERRANEAN CITY THROUGH THE AGES.Barmi.

BARMI
MEDITERRANEAN CITY,
 HISTORY AND EVOLUTION

Barmi is a city that, if existed, we could place it in Southern Europe, near the Mediterranean Sea, from the Iberian Peninsula to the Italian. Nowadays Barmi retains traces of a past which have been shaping her. Like any other city in the Mediterranean area, we can find footprints from the first people who lived in the valley, Roman buildings hidden in medieval houses or even in the modern ones. Remains of the city fort and medieval castles, and the narrow and crowded streets which form the map of the Gothic area.
We can recognize the sixteenth century traders’ palaces and houses that keep growing in height due to the population increase, closed within the walls. New technologies were incorporated and adapted in order to improve production; we go from craft production to manufacturing and later to the industrial production. Barmi still has the buildings that hosted different production systems, which the current political powers and citizens have kept and incorporated as a part of the city’s history. Barmi has grown and gained richness but also suffered armed conflicts and destruction which have changed her appearance.
Through 15 layers of the city’s evolution we intend to raise awareness of the reasons of urban and architectural forms of the cities in the same geographical area.
